3 ways to raise your Chem score

  1. 1

Show units and significant figures in every calculation; graders look for the setup.

  2. 2

Explanations must reference particle-level reasoning (intermolecular forces, Coulomb's law), not just restate the trend.

Common questions

How is the AP Chemistry exam scored?+

60 multiple-choice questions (50%) and 7 free-response questions — 3 long (10 points) and 4 short (4 points) — for 50%. Section scores are combined into a weighted composite, which the College Board converts to a score from 1 to 5.

What composite score do I need for a 5 on Chem?+

Cutoffs change every year. Based on historically released scoring, a 5 has typically required roughly 70% of the weighted composite, a 4 about 56%, and a 3 about 42%. Treat these as estimates.

How accurate is this AP score calculator?+

It uses the official section weights and estimated cutoffs from past exams, so it gives a good ballpark — usually within one score point. Your actual score depends on that year's curve.

When do AP scores come out?+

AP scores are typically released in early July through your College Board account.
