AP Calculus AB vs BC: Which Should You Take?
AP Calculus AB vs BC compared: content, pace, exam format, college credit, and the AB subscore, plus a clear framework for deciding which course fits you.
AP Calculus BC covers everything in AP Calculus AB plus two additional units: parametric, polar, and vector-valued functions, and infinite sequences and series. BC is not a harder version of AB so much as AB at a faster pace with more material added on. Choose BC if you are strong in precalculus, plan to pursue a STEM or quantitative field, and can handle a faster pace; choose AB if you want a deeper, steadier first pass through calculus or your algebra and trig foundations need reinforcement.
What is the difference between AP Calculus AB and BC?
Both courses share the same first eight units. BC adds Units 9 and 10 and moves through the shared material more quickly to make room.
| Unit | AB exam weighting | BC exam weighting |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Limits and Continuity | 10–15% | 5–10% |
| 2. Differentiation: Definition and Fundamental Properties | 10–15% | 5–10% |
| 3. Differentiation: Composite, Implicit, and Inverse Functions | 5–10% | 5–10% |
| 4. Contextual Applications of Differentiation | 10–15% | 5–10% |
| 5. Analytical Applications of Differentiation | 15–20% | 10–15% |
| 6. Integration and Accumulation of Change | 15–20% | 15–20% |
| 7. Differential Equations | 5–10% | 5–10% |
| 8. Applications of Integration | 10–15% | 5–10% |
| 9. Parametric Equations, Polar Coordinates, and Vector-Valued Functions | Not included | 10–15% |
| 10. Infinite Sequences and Series | Not included | 15–20% |
Weightings are from College Board's AP Students course pages.
What extra topics does BC cover?
Within the shared units, BC also includes several topics AB does not, such as additional integration techniques (integration by parts, partial fractions, and improper integrals), Euler's method, logistic differential equations, and arc length. Then come the two BC-only units:
- Unit 9: Parametric, polar, and vector-valued functions. Derivatives and integrals of curves described by parametric or polar equations, motion along a curve in the plane, and area in polar coordinates.
- Unit 10: Infinite sequences and series. Convergence tests, Taylor and Maclaurin polynomials and series, radius and interval of convergence, and error bounds. Most students find this the most abstract unit in either course.
Is the AP Calculus BC exam harder than AB?
The two exams have the same structure: the same number of multiple-choice and free-response questions, the same time limits, and the same calculator and no-calculator split. Both are hybrid digital exams, with multiple choice in the Bluebook app and handwritten free-response answers.
| Feature | AP Calculus AB | AP Calculus BC |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple choice | 42 questions, 1 hr 40 min | 42 questions, 1 hr 40 min |
| Free response | 6 questions, 1 hr 30 min | 6 questions, 1 hr 30 min |
| Calculator sections | MC Part B, FRQ Part A | MC Part B, FRQ Part A |
| Content | Units 1–8 | Units 1–10 |
| AB subscore | Not applicable | Reported with BC score |
The BC exam covers more material in the same amount of time, so each topic gets fewer questions. Students who are comfortable with the AB material often find BC manageable, because a large share of the BC exam is still AB-level content. The challenge is mostly the course, not the exam: keeping up with the pace all year.
What is the AB subscore?
When you take the BC exam, your score report also includes a Calculus AB subscore based on the AB portion of the exam. That gives BC students a built-in safety net: a student who struggles with series but has mastered the core calculus can still show strong AB-level performance. Whether a college awards credit for the subscore is up to that college.
AP Calculus AB vs BC for college credit
College credit policies are set by each college, not by College Board, and they vary widely. As a general pattern, a qualifying AB score often corresponds to one semester of college calculus, and a qualifying BC score often corresponds to up to two semesters. Highly selective schools may award placement but not credit, or require a 5.
Before you decide, look up the AP credit policy of a few colleges you are considering. College Board's AP credit policy search is a good starting point, but always confirm on the college's own website.
Do colleges prefer AP Calculus BC over AB?
Admissions officers evaluate your record in the context of what your school offers. If your school offers BC and you are applying to selective engineering, math, physics, computer science, or economics programs, BC can strengthen your application because it shows you took the most rigorous math available.
That said, a strong grade in AB is better than a weak grade in BC. A C in BC does not help you more than an A in AB, and calculus grades matter for STEM admissions. Choose the course in which you can both learn the material and earn a strong grade.
How to decide: AB or BC?
Work through these questions honestly.
- How did precalculus go? If you earned an A with time to spare and you are fluent with trig identities, logarithms, and function transformations, BC is realistic. If precalculus felt like a stretch, AB lets you build those skills while learning calculus.
- What do you plan to study? For engineering, physics, math, or computer science, BC typically lines up better with college requirements. For a business, life sciences, or humanities path, AB is often enough.
- What else is on your schedule? BC adds real weekly workload. If you are also taking several demanding APs, be realistic about time.
- How does your school structure it? Some schools teach BC in one year after precalculus. Others offer AB first and then BC. Ask your math department how they sequence it.
- What does your teacher recommend? Your current math teacher has seen your work and knows the BC pace at your school.
Signs you should take AP Calculus BC
- You finished precalculus with a strong grade and found it fairly comfortable.
- You are aiming for a quantitative major.
- You enjoy math and want to see more of it.
- You are willing to do steady homework every week instead of cramming before tests.
Signs AP Calculus AB is the better choice
- You want to build a solid calculus foundation before college.
- Algebra and trigonometry still slow you down.
- Your senior or junior year is already heavy.
- You plan to retake calculus in college anyway or your intended major needs only one semester.
Can you switch from BC to AB?
Many schools allow a switch early in the year, but policies differ, so ask your counselor before the add/drop deadline. If you are in BC and struggling, catch the problem early. Gaps in Units 1–6 compound quickly because almost everything in BC builds on them.
How to succeed in either course
The fundamentals are the same for both: master derivative and integral rules (our AP Calculus formula sheet lists them), practice released free-response questions, and learn the justification language graders reward. Our guide on how to get a 5 on AP Calculus AB lays out a step-by-step study plan, and our AP Calculus FRQ tips cover the scoring details. Frequently asked questions
Is AP Calculus BC much harder than AB?+
BC covers more material at a faster pace, including series and parametric and polar functions, but the shared content is the same. Most of the added difficulty comes from the workload and pace rather than from harder versions of the AB topics.
Can you take AP Calculus BC without taking AB?+
Yes. Many schools let students go directly from precalculus to BC, since BC includes all of the AB content.
Do you get an AB score if you take the BC exam?+
Yes. BC score reports include a Calculus AB subscore based on the AB portion of the exam. Colleges decide individually whether to award credit for it.
Which is better for college admissions, AB or BC?+
If your school offers BC and you are targeting a quantitative major, BC shows rigor. But a strong grade in AB is more valuable than a weak grade in BC.
